I'm a Data Scientist and AI Ethicist who belives we should be using tech to make the lives of marginalized people better.
In 2014, I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Digital Media and Communications degree. I worked for marketing agencies, app companies, and a plethora of online publishers before transitioning careers.
How I got started in Data Science
The app startup I was working for ran out of runway in early 2016 and I was stuck on unemployment and unsure how to find a new role on such short notice. I heard a little of the buzz around Data Science and I enrolled in a DS Master's program at Regis University. I enjoyed my experience and since have had the opportunity to work at as a Data Scientist at a Cannabis marketing platform, Public Safety Drone company, Wellness app, and my current role at SambaSafety.
After I graduated with my MS in Data Science I attendeed the Data 4 Black Lives Conference and my entire view of the industry changed. My eyes were open to how algorithms encode bias and I knew my focus would be to work to mitigate harm caused by biased machine learning.
Right now I'm working on a Linkedin Learning course, an e-book for newbies getting started in Data Science, and a book for practitioners on how to identify and deal with bias in their machine learning models.
I'm most active on Twitter and can be found giving talks at events like PyData, VentureBeat Transform, Data Science Go, and more!
